What has been lost or forgotten in your life & career

Finding what has been lost or forgotten in your life or career is such an amazing feeling.

It’s pure joy to rummage around in a cupboard or storage area and rediscover an item that brings back memories and  happiness.   And often it’s a trigger to remember a little part of ourselves that we had lost too as life happens.

Recently I found a dress that I had totally forgotten about .  Stuck in the back a spare room drawer I was beyond excited to find it after so many years 👗.

The dress has a floaty material and unique red, white and yellow print.  I always felt super sexy and confident wearing it to concerts and Sunday afternoon music sessions.  It made me feel like a little rock star (well in my own mind ha)

But for the last 6 years for a range of reasons, including COVID I hadn’t gone to music venues.  And with a major house move during those years my favourite fun dress was hidden into oblivion.

The discovery had my memory in overdrive and connected me with fun times and joy I had all but put on the backburner. It prompted and prodded me as I popped the dress on and danced around with a glass of wine.

But more importantly it nudged me to check out gig guides again and reconnect with the music that fuelled the soul and environments which were creative and carefree.

🔎 What has been hidden away?

And it got me thinking about all the things we have forgotten about, thought we had lost or simply got too busy to remember in our careers, businesses and bag of life tricks and tips.

As decades pass, the cupboards and boxes of memories, experiences and passions can be forgotten as they grow so large and diverse.

Or we can sometimes feel despondent and sense that something has been lost forever.  But in reality they are always there, just out of sight and out of mind.

What once was, can never be erased despite transient or long range amnesia or misplacement

🔎 How peeling the onion delivers gold

I see this situation play out regularly when I take clients through a deep dive career and business life questionnaire.

Taking them back to the roots of their teenage life and hopes and dreams across to the here and now result in many memories being rediscovered.

Some of those memories and experiences are still relevant and transferrable to careers and working life now. And some will not be.

It’s not just the skills, technology and relationships but the learnings, wisdom and achievements that connect back with our career essence of self value.

The process of peeling the onion is profound as it guides job search and career change or direction

People often dismiss a past memory or experience but often there are distinct links to weave into the current career direction and profile narrative.

Finding out what in your career from the past provides a pathway and psychological permission to revisit and reimagine that in a new context and application.

And once we rediscover what was once forgotten or lost, it can forever ignite a curiosity to dig for more.  And we will observe many examples and universal nudges of that in many ways.

It’s like buying a car and then noticing almost every second car on the road is the same brand.

What we give energy to will manifest back and multiply

🔎 Great questions move & delight

I know that I surprise myself in different situations when the right questions are asked of me and I can pull down an experience or story I had kind of put to the backblocks. And if you think about it that will be true for you too I’m sure.

This happened personally a few years back when I was interviewed by Kate Dillon for  her blog ‘What’s in Your Bag’. What came out from her questions was unexpected and connected me back to some core passions, times and values. Read the full interview here

The right questions asked in the right way sparks the brain to dig for something of relevance in that moment and context.  It feels like discovering something you had forgotten was always there, but hidden away.

🔎 The Career Discovery Process

Professionals and executives contact me as they feel lost in their career and have disconnected from their purpose, joy and direction.  Or many are confident in their career direction but seeking help to get them to interviews and offers.

After all it’s not a walk in the park to navigate the hiring ecosystem for even the most experienced and confident of executives and career professionals.

Many smart people are unaware of their brilliance and impact

And then some are not ready to take a leap into a job search but want their resume updated.  I now know it’s to give self-confidence and even a hope for a greater sense of connection with their career.

I have a process that informs the career purpose and direction of a client and that springs from a deep dive career discovery session. And from that a whole lot of items come out of the career cupboard that had been forgotten about or perceived to be lost.

The process gets people thinking about their past and current and in that mix will help them to:

Reconnect with a time, skills, environment or passion that energises

It’s just terrific when I see that occur and the transformation of self-worth and career purpose that starts to nudge and ruminate.  The bright light of self-reflection, acknowledgement of value is a fire cracker for many.

Normally I do this discovery process and resume overhaul as part of broader career marketing and job search programs.  But there it is another purpose of a resume process that is akin to finding old loved items in a cupboard.

And this is where a deep dive discovery process is gold. Digging into those hidden career cupboard, treasured memories once forgotten or lost, reignites confidence and a sense of calm and determination (yes that can happen simultaneously).

The longer our working life has been the greater likelihood of forgetting what is in our career cupboards and bag of wisdom

And what I mean by grace is permission to be vulnerable and accepting that some stuff is best left in the cupboard and a whole lot of other things need to be given light and love again.
